Friendship is a voluntary relationship between two people involving a mutual liking (Kail and Cavanaugh, 2013). As a child progresses in age and development, their vision of what a friend is varies. Clive is a typically developmental child; at the age of three, he has a “best friend”. Clive considers Joey his best friend because he is nice to him and shares his Tonka trucks with him at the park. From the ages of 3 to about 5 the key elements to Clive and Joey’s friendship is that they are nice to one another and they like playing together. When the boys are 16 years old, all of the elements of their younger friendship remain the same, but trust becomes more important. Intimacy also becomes a key element in their friendship. While it is more common with teenage girls, intimacy is an essential part of Joey and Clive’s friendship. There is a new girl Hannah at school that Clive really likes, having added intimacy to his and Joey’s relationship, Clive is able to express his excitement to Joey when he tells him that he and Hannah are going to the movies on a date. The boys will begin sharing their thoughts and feelings with one another in their teenage years. Clive also expects that Joey will provide him with social and emotional support. For example, Clive is struggling with his parent’s getting a divorce. When the boys were younger, Clive would have probably gotten emotional support from a family member, but now that the boys have developed a more intimate relationship, Clive turns to Joey for emotional support.
