The Role Of Individualism In Ayn Rand's Anthem

Improved Essays
Some countries believe in communism. After all, it aims to make everything equal and fair. Despite of this, most of the world rejects this idea. In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, communism and collectivist societies are viewed as a terrible idea. Anthem explores what would happen if the idea of communism continued to grow. There would be no individualism in communist societies, because everyone should be equal. According to Anthem, communism and collectivist societies should be disapproved of because individuality is rejected, there is no creativity, and there is no free choice or free will. Individuality is such a vital part of who we are, but what if that was taken away. Communism threatens to do just that. This idea of life without individualism …show more content…
Men can’t be creative with what they wear, because everybody has to wear the same thing. New things originating from creativity could lead to only some people who have it, which means not everybody would be equal. The person who invented something with creativity, shouldn’t be allowed to get praise, because everybody has to be treated equally. New inventions can be made, like candles and glass for windows, but these are things everybody can and have to use. When Equality 7-2521 found a lightbulb and showed to scholars, they were horrified. It is evil for Equality 7-2521 to think he has a greater mind than others. It is evil for him to think that he would be a better use for men as an inventor than a street sweeper that men decided him to be. “If this should lighten the toil of men . . . then it is a great evil, for men have no cause to exist save in toiling for other men.” This is said by a scholar in the book. If something new and creative is made that creates less work for men, then it is evil, because men only exist to work for mankind. Something new cannot be worked on individually. A collective group has to work on it, otherwise it is evil. “What is not done collectively, cannot be good.” Nothing should be done individually. If only one man worked on it, than the idea of that one man cannot change life for all mankind. “An individual is nothing. Mankind is all…” Everything has to be chosen by …show more content…
It is a sin to have a choice of something over another. Men are not even allowed to choose what they want to have as an occupation. The Council of Vocations decide that for the men. “Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you.” It is a great sin to have a choice. In Anthem, it is called the Transgression of Preference. You are only decided to do work that would benefit mankind the best. When someone is assigned something, they are not allowed to do something else that they wish, because that would be the Transgression of Preference. Their will for something against what men assigns them is denied. Will and choice to go against the Council is considered evil. When Equality 7-2521 finds a tunnel, he wants too and chooses to go in the tunnel. However, the Council has laws that say nobody is allowed to do anything that is not permitted, so Equality 7-2521’s will and choice is denied. The will to deny the Council is also very evil. When the council asks Equality 7-2521 where he has been, he decides not to tell them. For this, he gets lashed and imprisoned, to teach him not to deny the council. It is not allowed to have a choice of friends. “The great Transgression of Preference states that you cannot love any among men better than others, since we must love all men

While Equality 7-2521 knows his invention will benefit mankind, he did not intend for it's purpose to be that. His primary motivation is the need to prove that he is the greatest of the people, who contributed even as a measly street sweeper. Equality should be motivated this way, because in a world where everyone is limited in their thinking to benefit man collectively, Equality has no such burden. Throughout "Anthem" it shows that when the scholars have had the mindset of collectively helping mankind advance, they are then limited and refuse to accept more radical idea's. However, through history the theory is often shown that when countries advance in technology and new inventions the primary motivation is greed.…

By cause of its nature, scientific and technological progress will thrive in an environment where free thinking is allowed and encouraged. In Anthem’s totalitarian society, science and technology is incredibly rudimentary. Their latest invention, the candle, was presented and accepted 100 years ago; they haven’t invented anything in at least a century. When Equality 7-2521 presented his valuable discovery to the Council, they treated him unfairly by disregarding the invention’s many benefits for the society and focusing on the inventor’s so-called “wrongdoing”. The Council condemned Equality for his audacity to disobey the rules that confined him to be a thoughtless, street-sweeping drone.…

They each find something new and forbidden. In the novella Anthem, there is no distinctiveness between characters.…
