Prevention is an important method in the fight to end trafficking. Prevention requires laws to be implemented and revised and that these laws are enforced through out all levels of government nationally and internationally. Another important method is public awareness, education, and training. Lastly research can play an important role in capturing the depth and extent of human trafficking and to discover effective prevention methods.
When exploring protection there are three important factors to consider rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Many institutions are involved with rescue operations such as law enforcement of all levels that use stings, raids, street outreach, and make arrests. Non-governmental organizations such as health professional, and social service also help by indentifying the victims of trafficking. However, prosecutions rely on victim-wittiness testimonies, are difficult, and do not ensure convictions. Often times the victims of trafficking also find themselves facing charges and treated as criminal before it is known that they are victims. Under age victims are often placed in detention centers for easy law enforcement access and to keep them away from their traffickers. Social workers who are working in the legal criminal justice atmosphere need to be aware that using a strength-based person-centered focus will be most effective. Social workers need to fight for their clients to be permitted the use of therapeutic trauma informed practices rather than disciplinary actions that will be counter productive to their well being. The social workers are required to look out for the best interests of their clients in this case they are victims that find themselves being punished again.
