Factors that result in healthcare disparities may be grouped into the following categories: social, economic and physical. An individual’s ability to receive the most out of the healthcare system is determined and limited by these factors. For this reason, eliminating all factors that affect a person’s ability to obtain quality healthcare is the goal of nurses and other health care providers. As mentioned in previous articles, a nurse’s duty goes beyond the hospital; nurses have the duty to promote public health in their communities. This week’s articles focus on challenges that can be overcome to reach health equity locally, however through community level practice, we as future nurses have the potential to make a large impact and help improve…
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Maria Avina relocated with her family to Amarillo, Texas from our neighboring country. Maria, my 20 year old roommate, sat across from me dutifully working on her Calculus 3 homework, jokingly second guessing her choice of being a Mechanical Engineering major. Although she is a permanent resident of the United States, Maria hold strong ties with her mother country, keeping up with news regarding the country and its people. More recently, immigration and healthcare has been a huge topic of discussion in our household, so, understandably, I could not think of another person better to conduct this interview with. Curious…
I understand that people looking for a better life come to our country because they believe that our country will provide better opportunities for them and their families. This can be a burden on our government and takes a lot of weight on their shoulders of handling the newcomers. I can’t imagine not receiving healthcare because of my age or health history or not having food to eat, a house to live in or public education. However I do believe we should step back and look at our problems here. We have many homeless people, starving children, disabled veterans, etc.…

The United States is full of great things and even more great opportunities, but she also has her fair share of shortcomings. One of the main topics in the news today is the cost of healthcare in the United States, still spiraling out of control for many. There are a multitude of reasons for this, but one of the many is the issue of homelessness in the country. Whenever an economic recession occurs more people are added to the lists of the homeless due to job loss or foreclosure of property. Other risk factors are medical conditions, inadequate job skills, lack of education, domestic violence, addictions, and mental illness (Olivet, Paquette, Hanson, & Bassuk, 2010).…

Even though impartiality is a must in this profession, it is not always the case. By using a Double-Cross Sectional survey, the authors sampled 117 registered nurses from diverse geographic regions around the country. Many factors like the nurses’ age, years of experience, political views, etc. were also taken under consideration. The research concluded that the years of experience is the most determining factor associated with the nurses’ perception of socioeconomically disadvantaged patients.…

Perhaps, but it depends on your meaning of the word homeless. Homelessness is not just strictly an absolute lack of shelter but rather an extreme form of poverty characterized by instability of housing and inadequacy of income. Some people may have limited sensitivity to, and understanding of the issues of homeless because “Getting…
