The Role Of Heroes In S. E. Hinton's 'The Outsiders'

The three heroes unmasked, but one seen as indifferent. The Outsiders, written by S.E Hinton, is about two different social groups, who are always at each other's throat. In this story, there are 3 people who really show what a hero is. A hero is a person who would persevere even through the toughest time, and does what is right; the three following heroes from the Outsiders are Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny. Dally, at first, is noticed as a person who is far from being a hero. But as the story progresses on, Dally shows why and how he is a hero through his decisions. “‘ One night I saw Dally gettin’ picked up by the fuzz… was getting in for breakin’ out the windows in the school…. It was Two-bit… But he just took the sentence”’(Hinton 76). This quote shows how gallant he is, in how he just took a blow for his friend. Dally shows in this situation, bravery and loyalty to his friends, even in this tough circumstance. The decision Dally chose shows how he is gallant, although society, and even some of his own gang, like him least as a person. …show more content…
He was always smart in school, but now he finally did something that shows true heroism. “Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn’t be so quick to judge a boy by how much oil he wore”(Hinton 179). The quote shows that he wants to help others, by helping people understand those who are misunderstood. He surely revealed his way to persevere and show the world the truth of the greasers.
