In the novel 1984, the society has a very strict and one-sided government, as for the government in America, it is very different compared to the how things are run in the book 1984. In America, anyone can have any type of belief and can live any lifestyle that they might desire. Also, in America, any citizen can have the freedom do anything as close to getting any job they want. As for the government in 1984, no one has their own beliefs because every citizen has to agree with whatever Big Brother says. Although Orwell's dystopia has elements of 21st-century democracy, however, 1984 is not enough like free democratic societies because in a free society citizens are allowed to vote for their representatives in government and in 1984 a ruling …show more content…
The main tool of control is the illusion that someone is always watching. The telescreen, which is in every home, on every street corner, and in every business is always watching. Orwell writes, ¨BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU¨ (Orwell 2). No citizen in a dystopian totalitarian government will ever have a say in what they believe in because everyone has been brainwashed to never question Big Brother. Currently, throughout the world there are signs of illiberal democracies; Nations that have the appearance of fair democratic elections, but the same leaders keep being voted into power. Forrest Colburn points out, “In contemporary democratic theory, political parties are essential building blocks. They have responsibility for aggregating public preferences, formulating plans for governing, and fielding candidates” (Colburn 77). It is the ruling party’s responsibility to not exploit its citizens. As for one person who has had enough of this government nonsense, he wanted to change and his name is Winston Smith. Winston was one of the only citizens in Oceania who stood up for what he considered to be what his opinion was. In the 1984 novel, Orwell states, ¨Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. It was safer, though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing.¨ (Orwell 3) Winston is staying true to himself and won't let anyone take that away from him or make him think …show more content…
In present-day Russia, President Putin has been in power since the beginning of the 21st century. According to Sarah Oates, ¨Whenever possible, the Kremlin is poised to exploit divisions among parties and even undermine trust in democracy itself through propaganda and misinformation¨ (Sarah 282). Leaders fear to lose their power. They use information as a weapon of control. Winston's job in the Ministry of truth is changing newspapers to reflect the party’s lies: “There was never any evidence. Just once in his whole life, he had held in his hands unmistakable documentary proof of the falsification of a historical fact¨ (Orwell 36). Changing the past to reflect the ideas of the present works because the people are

Government exists for the people, not to control the people. After reading 1984 I had many takeaways about the book's overall meaning, strong opinions on the characters of Winston and Julia, and an overall opinion of the book. In 1984 the government, led by Big Brother, watches everything their people do and even controls their very thoughts. This form of government catches my attention because of how controlling it is over their people. Also, the government makes the citizens so clueless as to where they completely hypnotize them to agree with every single one of their ideas.…

Psychological control by the government forces people to live in fear, with the message and most symbolic quote of the book, “Big Brother is watching you”, instills the sense of fear into the minds of citizens. Physical control of citizens is also an integral part of the power the government exercised. The government forces its citizens to take part in a routine exercise every morning. To achieve this, they apply physical and mental restrictions, surveillance, propaganda, and shame of language to gain control of the people 's minds. When a person first thinks of an overpowering government, what comes to mind? None other than the ruler who uses their iron fist to smash his opposition into submission and acceptance of the rulers demands. The rulers of this novel are called “The Party” which uses the name Big Brother. It is clear that the iconical figure of Big Brother has their eyes set to the people because “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU (Orwell 3)” and there is no comfort when a person’s every move is being watched by a collective person who is both larger and stronger than that person. This symbol of oppression uses stiffening fears and lack of privacy to allow The Party to ensure that none disagree with their demands.…
