Giles Correy and I “I am asked the question, i am old enough to answer it!” said the sassy Giles Correy from The Crucible when he was interrupted in court. Giles Correy was pressed to death in the Salem witch trials for not admitting/ denying himself as a witch, the only thing he did was call for more weight to be stacked on his body. Before Giles was accused of witchcraft he was arrested for contempt of the court because he refused to give up his friend’s name, and even before that he was a sue happy man whom had an extensive knowledge of the court. Giles Correy and I have several comparable traits in that we are stubborn, sassy, and loyal individuals.…

The events of the witch trails became so well known that Arthur Miller decided to write a play based off of it called The Crucible. Giles Corey’s proof for his charge is a trustworthy man informed him. Giles decides against giving up the witness’ name because he doesn’t want to endanger him. Giles’ guilt is embodied in the quote, “I will not give you no name, I mentioned my wife’s name once and I’ll burn in hell long enough for that. I stand mute.” Miller shows that Giles learns from his mistakes and for that reason he won’t give another person up, even if it’s for the sake of his wife.…

“This is a sharp time, now, a precise time-we live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now, by God 's grace, the shining sun is up, and them that fear not light will surely praise it” as quoted by Danforth in Act III explaining how the “devil” is living among and throughout the town. In The Crucible, there have been many cases where John Proctor, the main character has the characteristics of an “archetypal” tragic hero. Proctor did commit adultery in the play with Abigail Williams while he was married to his wife, Elizabeth Bassett-Proctor. He struggles with the weight of the sin of committing his adultery.…

When faced with stressful situations, a physiological reaction occurs known as the fight or flight response. The body releases large amounts of adrenaline, which leads to actions of either escape or attack. This reaction can occur, not only under survival threats, but also in “attacks” like an argument. The stress hormones and adrenaline released give the courage and determination necessary to overcome and fight the challenges at hand. When Giles Corey is faced with adversity, such as his own imminent death, his fight or flight response kicks in and gives him the courage to remain unyielding in his beliefs and to fight, rather than escape by telling a lie to the government of Salem.…

In the Bible Solomon writes, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9). In The Crucible, Giles Corey and John Proctor stand up for what they believe is right and strictly stand by their beliefs and God’s will. They stand up against the court because they know the innocent are are giving in and confessing to things they are not guilty of for the sake of saving their own lives, and Gile and Proctor want to stand up for the truth. In The Crucible, the death of Giles Cory and John Proctor help show that one can stand for what he/she believes, one can die for his/her morals, and that people won’t always stand up for…

This shows how Giles Corey is an appropriate example of how the Salem Witch Trials are an illustration of man’s inhumanity to man. In Salem, Massachusetts around 1692-1693 C.E. 200 people were accused of performing witchcraft. These people were only accusing people because of fear and religion. Witches were feared by everyone in Salem because of the unanimous belief in Christianity. Around this time, people in Salem thought that one could sell their soul to the devil.…

There are quite a few characters in “The Crucible” and all with different situations and personality, but a man named John Procter is the character is the character that peeks my interests most. John Procter was a farmer/outcast of Salem who has a wife (Elizabeth), 2 kids, and usually never attended the church. John is a good honest man who is able to see all perspectives of a situation and always sought for a solution that would benefit the people most, he was really looked up to by the people of the village. John has played an important role in the development of the story.…

Giles Corey, John Proctor, and Elizabeth Proctor are some of the few courageous enough to do what is right in the face of danger. Giles Corey goes against the court and most of the town to save his wife and others. Almost everyone believes the girls lie and yet he still calls out Putman. “This man is killing his neighbors for their land” (Miller96). Giles is willing to risk his life to prove that all the so-called “witches” are just the unlucky people with land and money for the taking.…

John Proctor is the protagonist of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” because he is an advocate of a cause or belief and a figure that furthers the plot. John Proctor is an advocate of several causes. One event that he fights against is the court's decision to condemn his wife, Elizabeth, of witchcraft. Salem, Massachusetts is known for the Salem witch trials. The trials tested the skills and characters of those accused of being a witch. Though the test often consisted of fire and water, if the tension was high enough, a mere accusation had the accused hanged. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is mostly a typical story of the Salem Witch Trials with all of the tension included. The difference lies in the fact that it is not only the accused being tested under pressure.…

Literature is a wonderful thing; it explores the relationships between humans and their nature, historical events, and can be used to express one’s creativity. It can also be used to give moral guidance; this was Arthur Miller’s reasoning behind writing The Crucible. In this dramatic retelling of the Salem trials, Miller ensnares his reader with stories of adultery, betrayal, and material greed. His intention, however, is not to entertain with operatic drama. This play is a cautionary tale about finger pointing and its potentially fatal consequences.…

Those who chose to be more individual include Giles Corey, Rebecca Nurse, and John Proctor. Among these few are many other characters who have their roles in Salem. When various characters throughout The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, are put to the test during the Salem witchcraft trials , it is clear to tell that despite the strong efforts of the individualistic characters, overall, society always prevails and is deemed “winner” because its dominating power overcompensates for individuals thoughts. Both Reverend’s in Salem bend towards society to try to help the witch hysterias from getting out of hand. Society in Salem was under strict rulings during the time of the Salem witchcraft trials.…

In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, it shows the hangings of numerous people for being accused of witchcraft. Some of the deaths were unnecessary and could have been avoided without interrupting or taking away from the story; while on the other hand some were crucial as to stopping the trials from going any further. I also believe that some deaths were meant to teach some characters in The Crucible a kind of lesson that they learn from. A death that I don’t believe was especially needed in the story, but did influence another to not confess, was Giles Corey’s. The reason as to why his death was not crucial to the story is that he is not a highly thought of person, or character in the story; so yes people would be affected by it, but…
