The Role Of Friendship In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

In the novel, “Of Mice And Men”, Steinbeck explores how we as humans can have many different types of friendships which, in the end, help define who we are. The story tells us about a man named George and his best friend named Lennie who has the mentality of a little kid. Their friendship is extremely strong and this is kind of unusual in the book due to all the other characters being very lonely. George is a harsh but loyal man and mainly controls their friendship. Lennie is not a bright man, but he has a soft personality. Every time George and Lennie manage to have a job, Lennie always does something that forces them to leave town. A big dream the two of them share is to own their own land and be able to live freely off the land. In the beginning …show more content…
We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don’t have to sit in no bar room blowin’ in our jack jus’ because we got no place else to go. If them guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us.” Lennie adds “But not us! An’ why? Because...because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.”(14) They believe that as long as they have each other they will be alright no matter what faces them. This shows how they believe in loyalty as friends by being able to trust each other with their lives and knowing that they have each others backs. As the story progresses, we see George and Lennie start to fit right in at the new ranch they are working on, until Curly provokes Lennie to a point where Lennie couldn’t control himself. That resulted in Lennie crushing Curley's hand with his uncontrollable strength. Lennie repeats over and over that he didn't mean to hurt him and never wanted to. Being the good friend that George is he told Lennie “It ain’t your fault, you don’t need to be scairt no more. You done jus’ what I tol’ you to.”(65) Even though George knows in the back of his head that it may have not been the wisest to crush Curly’s hand, he still stood by his best friend by supporting him for something that might cost them their
