Using a case study can be a powerful tool to enhance a learning experience or foster critical thinking skills within a group. The particulars of the case can resonate with learners and spark deep and probing questions about assumptions on a level that a lecture or other similar learning activity cannot. This report summarizes the group process we utilized in order to develop a case study for use with other class groups. It details the theoretical models that underpin our study as well as a proposed solution that is contrasted with an actual solution adopted by another group. It concludes with a discussion of the learning points gleaned by the group during the design, construction and resolution of the case.
Pathway to the Case
Case development by our group was achieved through an informal process of reflection, collaboration and negotiation. The group composition included a fairly diverse set of military backgrounds and experiences that colored our individual approach to case study development. Upon learning of our assignment we began a period of …show more content…
We chose to emphasize Behaviorist, Humanist and Social Cognitive theories in our case study. Behaviorist theory seeks to direct behaviors and actions toward a desired end state (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). This type of learning takes place at some of the lowest levels of Bloom’s taxonomy of learning. However, the importance of developing the ability to shape baseline behaviors in Midshipmen cannot be overlooked. We view this theory as a foundational one in which other, deeper and more advanced, learning theories are layered on top. Enhancing Behaviorist learning skills enhances our ability to shape the values of Midshipmen and will continue their socialization process as they move from plebe to
