Abstract
Successful Assessments can be thriving when educators have positive perceptions about assessments and willing to learn to use it. It is best for educators to research methods of instruction to connect and teach assessments in order to make lucrative curriculum for students. Conscious educators who provide assignments that students can invest and take ownership in their learning can enable them to be leaders of tomorrow. Teachers can use different types of assessments to connect with their students learning. Such assessments can be diagnostic, summative, formative or comprehensive as long as it aligns with student knowledge. I was enthralled by the video’s presentation about comprehensive assessment because it pushed students to learn real life skills, work in groups and do presentations of what they have learned. Students who are invested in their learning can remember facts better then memorizing it. For instance, in my experience, working with preschoolers, I wanted to expose my students to their surrounding outside of their classroom by giving them meaningful real experiences. I asked my students about the types of things they see outside, I read books about New York City and we brainstormed ideas on paper. I took my students outside for a walk as they loved looking at the stores, the car, and the buildings. When we arrived back to school we talked about what new things we saw. The next day I had my student’s work in small groups. Students created small murals using writing utensils, scissors, scraps of materials and glue. They constructed their project of what they visualize of New York City. Finally in circle time, I had my students present their project as I evaluated their learning by asking questions. In my view, the Edutopia video regarding comprehensive assessment depicts student engaged in learning with each other as they used facts to present information to their teachers. He also explains that according to teacher’s positive perceptions of assessments, it brings forth students to practice, reflect and get immediate feedback from their teachers. White (2009) states “It is important that we, as professional educators interested in becoming more assessment literate, consider ourselves to be learners in the classroom” (p. 12). I agree that teachers should take account of using assessments like summative, formative or diagnostic depending on student experiences, what they know and their learning styles. I can only do some simplified forms of formative and summative assessments with my 2-3 years old students. For instance, I use formative assessment weekly by observing and take notes of my students to evaluate their social, emotional, and cognitive and language developments. I also model the art activities during circle time and read books about the activity. Once students start their activity and complete it, then I ask questions. As for summative assessment, I only use a checklist as I ask students to do tasks that measure their development skills, their progress, growth, strengths and weakness. These check lists are observed by parents twice a year. No matter what assessment used it is crucial that it connects with goals that teacher’s wants student to
