The Role Of Fetuses In Prenatal Development

“Fetuses do not have rights, pregnant women do” Ari Armstrong. One can say that the controversies about the rights of a fetus are amongst believers and non-believers. Believers of God state that He does everything for a reason and that the second a fetus is conceived then it has a right to life. Whereas non-believers think otherwise, they view the world in a scientific perspective and take into consideration the stages/periods of a fetus as well as the pregnant women herself. There are exactly three periods in the prenatal development: the germinal period, the embryonic period, and the fetal period. Another given name for these periods are, the first trimester (weeks 4-12), the second trimester (week 16-24), and the third trimester (week 28-36/39). …show more content…
It is when the egg and the sperm of the parents come in union and create a cell known as a zygote. During this period the development of the spinal cord, nervous system, gastrointestinal system, heart, and lungs, take place (Santrock, 2015). Following that, the embryonic period takes place during the two to eight weeks of conception where the fetus’ face is developing and its brain is forming. Which then leads to the final stage, the fetal period, which starts around the tenth week of conception and lasts seven …show more content…
Even if doctors can distinguish the sex during their twelfth week, has coordinated movements in their sixteenth week, and their heartbeat is audible with just an ordinary stethoscope in the twentieth week (Santrock, 2015), a fetus should not have any rights what so ever. Once the fetus is at twenty-four weeks then I believe it has the right to live. However, if a mother wants to get an abortion anytime before that then I believe that the mother has the right to do what she wishes.
With that saying, I do not think that the development of the child’s senses should be considered part of the prochoice/prolife debate. What should be taken into consideration though are the circumstances of the mother. People should ask the questions, would the mother be able to financially support her and her child? How was this child conceived? Was it through rape, unprotected sex, or from her spouse? Is the mother emotionally/mentally stable? These are the questions that should be considered during the first twenty-four weeks of the mother being pregnant and not so much the development of its

Every unborn child should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the second and third trimester. In 2010, research shows that states indicated that unborn children are considered humans under tort, property and criminal law (Roden, 2010). By these laws shown, a mother shouldn’t get to choose whether the fetus lives or dies. The unborn child is its own person and by a mother aborting her own child should be considered murder. Under law a child is supposed to be born for many different reasons, including being capable of having a legacy (Roden, 2010).…

With the help of medical professionals, a general consensus was reached stating that prenatal life, or a fetus, is technically viable – that is, able to live outside the womb no longer dependent on the mother – by the third trimester of a pregnancy, or at 24 weeks. An earlier removal of the fetus from the womb would likely result in an inability to perform basic functions, such as breathing due to incomplete development (Breborowicz). While the abortion rights following the first three months of pregnancy are not quite clear or consistent across states, Roe v Wade essentially mandated that within the first trimester, a woman is free to undergo an abortion and make that decision solely with her doctor, and…

In this essay I wish to discuss what Hursthouse calls the argument for the Extreme Liberal View concerning the moral status of the human foetus – that is, the view that the foetus is in most if not all morally relevant respects like a piece of tissue or a bit of the human body. The argument is an extension of all Libertarian philosophy. That is, that I as an individual have the ultimate right of what decisions happen to my own body, and that this right cannot be trumped by another. This right to bodily autonomy is thus extended to all pregnant woman.…

Late Term Abortion Abortion is a vast topic of controversy. My standpoint is that all forms of abortion are wrong and unethical. There are approximately 42 million abortions a year and approximately 115,000 every day ("Abortion Facts| Facts on Abortion | Abortion Facts and Statistics"). Abortion is a controversial subject that everybody has an opinion about. There are several reasons as to why this is the case. Abortion is a terrible act that should be abolished because it violates the rights of the unborn child, murders the unborn child, and can cause health problems for the mother in the future. When a woman aborts her baby, she is violating the rights of the unborn child.…

Living in a world filled with people of different cultures, religions, and personalities, it is impossible to think that with every situation that presents itself in American that mutual agreement upon it will be made. In the news, we constantly hear debates about gay-marriage, police brutality, racism, and many other incidents in America that bring out the inner activists of our people. Most debates over these controversies are no surprise to the public because they have been going on for years. One in particular is the debate about abortions. Since 1973, the world has been divided into two distinct groups of “Pro-life” and “Pro-choice” due to the landmark case of Roe v. Wade.…

This is a huge concern when it comes to pregnancy and prenatal harm. The mother that is carrying the child still has rights to autonomy and control over herself. Yet, the fetus also has the right to life and right to life without harm. Establishing a parity between the life of a fetus and the life of the mother is very difficult. Minkoff and Paltrow said, "In so doing, they suggest a need to balance rights when those rights appear to conflict with each other, and potentially to subordinate the rights of the women to those of the fetus" (Minkoff and Paltrow, p. 757).…

If this were not true, there would be no need to even talk about rights of personhood. People are known for having sympathetic feelings to a child who is visible over the unborn fetus. However, pro-life activists hold that emotions that cannot form a basis for justifying birth. With the fetus being born or not being born; the fetus does have a chance in becoming a full human being. Viability of a fetus to survive outside the womb independently is when the fetus is able to get that ‘full human being’ status. Abortion also raises ethical issues of character.…

The development of the fetus is affected by the body condition of the mother. Problems such as diseases, nutrition, depression and age among others can adversely affect the fetus. Understanding the body processes during pregnancy is significant for the pregnant woman. This knowledge helps in ensuring that they do not jeopardize the development of the fetus, for example through taking drugs. Viral diseases in the mother are a major threat to the fetus due to their small size which the placenta may be unable to sift out to prevent them from attacking the fetus.…
