The Role Of Equality In Anthem By Ayn Rand

Equality is a young man who is very intelligent, self-involved, and curious. In the book ¨Anthem¨ by Ayn Rand, Equality's primary motivation is his own self discovery. He realizes that he is unlike the rest of the others and he becomes very interested in the things that he can do as one instead of as a group. Equality discovers the power of electricity, while in his underground tunnel. He goes to the tunnel every evening, to perform experiments. Equality manages to go to the tunnel during Social Recreation time, and returning before it is over. While in the tunnel, he soon discovers electricity. As time goes by, Equality successfully creates a light bulb, made from materials in the tunnel. Equality shows joy in conducting his experiments. Especially if you have a a lot of friends and family who care for you. It could also be the best thing to do too, depending on the situation. Equality had very few friends, and a small amount of people actually cared for him. Putting himself first seemed like the only thing he could do, since being forced to be a street sweeper did not allow him to pursue his ambitions. Equality is used to being the same as everyone else, so while in the tunnel, the experiments help him not feel that way anymore. If everyone was motivated in the same way as Equality, through their own self discovery, I think the world would go downhill. Equality spent most of his time, alone, in the tunnel. Today, people are mostly all social, so if everyone canceled each other out, the world would not be the same. Although, Equality in the end had a friend who stuck by his side named Liberty . He renamed her ¨ the Golden One¨, because she was very special to him. I think that as long as you have good friends to support you, and you are a good friend to them, you can succeed and have the same type of motivation as Equality
