The story centers around a brother and sister fighting over what to do with a piano. Boy Willie tries to sell the piano to buy Sutter's land and Bernice focuses on keeping it due to the history that it has. Throughout the story, both continually view the piano as a piece of furniture. As they continually fight over the piano, Sutter’s ghost appears multiple times and torments them. In the end, Boy Willie gives up on selling the piano and Bernice is able to play on the piano alongside her daughter Meritha.
