Narcotics are a massive problem all over. There are many countries dealing with drug addiction problems. From the well-developed/high incomed to the under develop/low incomed but, there are some factors that come into to play in the prevalence of drug/ drug addiction in these countries. Today we will be looking at three different countries, the United States, United Kingdom, and Mexico then see how the drug abuse and drug addiction differs in these different places.
The United States is a well-developed and high-income country but it still deals with drug abuse. The United States is number 9 on the list of Most Drug Addicted Countries in the World (Qool Media,2018). According to Drug War Facts "in 2016, 28.6 million people aged 12 or older …show more content…
Drug laws were created to control the way people handle drugs whether that be the use, ownership or manufacturing. Different states have different laws set to which drugs are legal or illegal. The U.S has pretty strict laws against narcotics compared to the other two countries especially Mexico. There are programs in the U.S that help people educate about drugs for example the program D.A.R.E which focus on educating elementary, middle school and high school. The education level in the United States is pretty high 80% of the U.S population has graduated from high school. Next, we will discuss the United Kingdom. The U.K is number 8 on the of Most Drug Addicted Countries in the World (Qool Media,2018). Just like the U.S the U.K has many laws and programs when it comes to drugs and drug abuse to help with drug addiction. When it comes to laws with drug the U.K has The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 the law is more about punishing people with the possession of drugs under the A, B or C category rather than punishing for possession and use. One of the reason people get so hooked on drugs is because they don’t know enough about the substance they are putting in their bodies or the effects it can have in the long run. Many narcotics have different addiction levels, psychological dependence and physical dependence. There should be more programs that go out an inform younger and older adults about the dangers of drugs and drug addictions. They should inform them about the different levels of addiction and dependency especially physical dependency. That every drug is different and affects people differently. Another way to help treat drugs effectively would be do make drug rehabilitation cheaper and more accessible. The rates for rehab differ depending on the place and some insurance covers some rehabilitation but there are plenty of people out there who don’t have money nor insurance. Everyone should have the same opportunity on getting better. According to U.S News " An estimated 80 to 90 percent of individuals who could benefit from treatment are not getting it" (U.S News,2018).
