Throughout life, we sometimes find ourselves dreaming and aspiring for many different reasons such as possessions, a better life, success etc. Within the play, “A Raisin In the Sun”, by poet Lorraine Hansberry (1507), clearly displays aspirations and dreams through several characters. Mrs. Younger, Walter Lee, and Beneatha all have dreams that are dear to them. These dreams reveal a great deal about the nature of their desires. Each of their dreams serves as an important psychological function such as hope, motivation, and direction; however, their dreams not only divides the characters, but also creates conflict which helps in setting the tone for this play and capturing the reader's attention. Younger always dreamed of having a home; however, as time passed, her dream of a house dwindled away into an implausible hope. Her plant was a symbol of her dream's, small but a continued existence. Her plant represented the contemptuous of the dream as a result of the denial of a life outside the apartment. Her care for her plant is analogous to her care for her children, unconditional and never-ending despite their living environment. The plant served as a symbol of her dream to own a house and, more specifically, to have a garden and a yard. With her plant, she practices her gardening skills. Her success with the plant helps her believe that she would be successful as a gardener. Her persistence and dedication to the plant cultivates her hope that her dream may come true. Due to the unfortunate death of her husband, she was promised $10000. Receiving this money would allow her to not only fulfill her own dream, but her children’s dream also. Mrs. Younger’s son Walter dream was to soar above his social classification and regain his self-respect, superiority, and veneration. He truly feels that he can accomplish this dream by investing in a liquor store with some of his friends as joint investors. Next, her daughter Beneatha dream was to become a doctor. She truly believes that providing medical care is on of the best things a person can give to
