Although she can no longer hear, the audience observes her heightened senses. At one point in the movie, the masked killer makes his way into the house and creeps up behind Maddie. Just as the audience is convinced Maddie is about to die, the masked killer lets out a light breath that Maddie feels on the back of her neck. Maddie is alerted by this tiny breath and is able to quickly turn around and defend herself.
