During this part of the novel he is talking to Clary, the protagonist of the novel, about what his life purpose is. You see, Jace parents suffered from an awful death, when they got betrayed by one of their friends. Jace was just ten years old when the incident happened. If you are forced to do anything that you really don’t enjoy just to please another person, then you will also probably have a miserable life. You have to do whatever makes you truly happy and ecstatic. It has to be something that whenever you wake up, you’re feeling happy about that certain goal or aspiration, and not forced. When it comes to taking a big life decision you at least have to base your answer on a certain goal or theme. A good example for me would be, what college I’m going to choose. I probably would like to go to an engineering school because math and science are my favorite subjects. I also want to go to a prestigious school, so thats why I’m taking extra credit courses. Because if I go to a good school, then I would probably end up with a good job with a nice income, to later marry a nice girl and have a nice family. What I’m trying to say here is that, every decision that I take leads to another decision and so on, so that at the end, I accomplish my goals and life desires. It might not go as you plan it, because anything can happen during the journey, but at least your pointing your arrow towards a target. That, keeps you concentrated and focused. There might be temptations in life, and there might be times when you take bad decisions but you can always come back to your path and keep moving
