Being a single parent is one of the hardest things to do as an adult, and even harder raising kids in a good and respective way. This is what Atticus Finch did in the book To Kill A Mockingbird with his daughter, Scout, and his son, Jem. Atticus is a very good role model for his kids and for everyone surrounding him because he shows protection, respect, and well-mannered.
Atticus is a good father because throughout the book you can see him constantly protecting Jem and Scout. During the trial Atticus taught Jem and Scout to protect those who are innocent. This is protection because it teaches Jem and Scout that the right thing doesn’t mean the easiest thing. One example is when Jem killed Bob Ewell Atticus wouldn’t let the sheriff say that Bob fell on the knife because Atticus knew Jem needed his actions to have the appropriate actions. Atticus said, “

This is shown greatly in this book during the trial with Tom Robinson. Atticus sees everyone as equal, Black or White, and thinking this is very out of the ordinary. It was so irregular for someone to think this that Jem and Scout got made fun of at school for this but nothing stopped Atticus to try and prove this black man’s innocence. He said "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.". He said this meaning that there is no better way to get to understand someone until you see what their life experiences and past is like. This frase related to the trial because Atticus looked at the situation from Tom’s point of view and he realized that he should not have to go through what he did just because he is an African

Atticus sets a good example to Scout and Jem because he believes everyone is equal and; therefore, Tom Robinson is black, it doesn't mean he can't defend him. For example, Atticus tells Scout many times that if he didn't defend Tom Robinson he wouldn't tell Jem or Scout not to do something. He has to set a good example for his children and if he expects them to do something or follow certain values, then he must display them first. In the book Atticus says, "The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” This quote proves that whatever Scout or Jem believe in they have to stand up for it.…

Atticus also defends racial justice in Tom Robinson’s case, even though the people of the town antagonize him for being the defense attorney for a black man. When the jury announces that they’ve found Tom guilty without any evidence, this is an example of how Atticus cares for humanity no matter what color skin color they are. The jury made their decision the day they found out Tom Robinson was a black man, but this didn’t stop Atticus from fighting for Tom. Atticus still had tried his best to prove that the Ewells were lying, and that Tom was an innocent…

He does this to back up his own argument while looking into the mindset of Mayella. He states one while he talks about what Mayella had to been thinking at the time of the crime, “What did she do? She tempted a Negro.” While Atticus explains this argument, he makes sure the jury can see how Mayella only had 2 options: act as an innocent girl and frame Tom, or be beat for the rest of her life mercilessly by her father. Mayella taking the easier route, decided to frame Tom, all the while it was in fact her advances onto him that caused this to happen.…

Although Tom Robinson’s trial contained difficult topics that Jem and Scout may not have been ready to learn about, Atticus told them about it and did not kick them out after noticing that they were watching. He makes sure that they know the importance of courage and justice, which is shown when he says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 149).
