Abraham Lincoln started his military life on April 21, 1832 when he enlisted the first of three times in the Black Hawk War. This paper will go over his first enlistment as an elected captain, his second enlistment as a private, and his third enlistment a private in a “Spy Company.” His goal was to protect illinois. When the Civil War broke out Lincoln was President and Commander-in-Chief of the military. His goal was to keep states from seceding. Lincoln’s first enlistment was in the 4th Regiment of Mounted Volunteers as part of General Samuel Whiteside’s Brigade during the Black Hawk War. On the very day that he was discharged from General Samuel Whiteside’s Brigade he reenlisted in Captain Elijah Ises’ Company as a private. His role in the Black Hawk War as captain was to protect Illinois. Although he did not see any combat, he saw the aftermath of the battle of Stillman’s Run and Kellogg's grove. Seeing the bloody bodies across the battlefields deeply affected him. The Black Hawk War was a win for the Americans when they caught up with Black Hawk and his men and killed or captured most of them. His military leadership was that he was a captain in the Black Hawk War and Commander-in-Chief during the Civil War. His main mission during the Civil War was to find the right general. There were many men that were promoted to general and then demoted when they were found incompetent. Finally Lincoln found Ulysses S. Grant who was able to lead the Union armies to success.
