How Abortion Changed the World Abortion has been around for a very long time, and has had an effect on the world, both positive and negative. Christian influence in Western Civilizations caused widespread disapproval of this practice. It wasn’t until the 19th century that countries started to ban abortion, with the United States following in the late 20th century. Some states initially disapproved the ban, leading to the concern in the pro-life community. However, the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 stated that the ban against abortion was unconstitutional, sending the debate of pro-life and pro-choice into a wild frenzy. The debate heightens when it comes to referring to abortion as a form of birth control. Since the overall legalization in 1973, over 57 million unborn babies have been killed, which is more than to population of Spain. That is one every twenty-four seconds. Abortion is wrong because it is not simply a personal choice, but a grave offense against God and His creation. Blessed Mother Teresa on abortion: “It is a poverty to decide that a child must Diego that you may live as you wish.” Individuals on the pro-life side of the debate also believe that the fetus is a human being at the point of conception, making it murder. The anti-abortion battle has almost always been a religious battle, at the leading edge, its ranks have been Catholics across the country. This is because the church’s teaching on this is clear: Abortion is murder. Abortions are also a composite of tragedies. Sometimes the circumstances around an abortion surrounding a pregnancy are tragic. In some cases, the woman may have been raped. Perhaps the child will be born with a birth defect. Or possibly, the pregnancy is a health-risk to the woman. Nonetheless, one problem is not fixed with another. We do not erase rape by killing a child nor do we cure the baby by taking its life. Take away the freedom of a woman 's reproductive system, The United States Supreme Court declared abortion to be a “fundamental right” guaranteed by the US Constitution. There are many benefits to abortion, such as population control, and the tissue from aborted fetus’ that have been donated by the mothers can also be used to help scientists develop treatments for various diseases. Some could argue that the fetus is not necessarily a person, but personhood starts when the child becomes viable, or is able to survive outside the womb, the fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when most abortions are performed, and that the option of abortion should be legalized because women who are denied abortion are more likely to suffer mental health problems rather than women who are granted terminations. There also could be exceptions, such as the ones listed above. In the online article Abortion is Good For Everyone, It’s Science, it states that: “Abortion is a wonderful thing. It’s a safe and simple medical procedure that allows women to control whether and when to have babies, and, in certain cases when a pregnancy become life-threatening, it saves women 's lives.
