A lie can travel all around town, before the truth gets out of bed. The character Abigail was caught doing witchery in the woods and lied saying she saw other girls from the village with the devil. Abigail is the most despicable girl in the play, because she spread a lie around town, so that she would not be hung. John Proctor had an affair with Abigail, while being married to Elisabeth. She then fell in love with him despite their age difference. John said to Abigail,” Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller, 1140). John wants nothing to do with Abigail, because she has ruined his marriage.
