Being a section leader in band has not only taught me the skills necessary for leading a section of the band, but it has taught me the skills necessary for being an effective leader in general. The role I inherited as a section leader was to oversee and teach my section, complete any jobs that the band needed done, and uphold the morality of the band. Throughout the marching season, I gradually learned how to do this, and I learned how to be a better leader in general.

To begin, our band director frequently emphasizes that marching band is a group effort, and the whole group is only as strong as its weakest individual. I find this statement to be true for marching band as well as any activity involving multiple people. It is important for

I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression.…

If I were to be a section leader, I would be able to take on a challenge that few are willing to take on and be able to see the outcome of my leadership and how it affects the ensemble, which would be fulfilling. I would also be able to have the satisfaction of helping my section mates become the best marchers and people they can be in all ways I can. Best of all, I would be able to be someone people can easily approach with no judgement, which I feel everyone needs. Overall, being a section leader to me would be the most satisfying and enriching way for someone to be able to help the Marching Pioneers become better than…

From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…

The book Persepolis we see Iranian refugees struggling to get away from radical Islamic people and the rules they bring. A few of the rules include all women wearing veils and men not being allowed to shave their faces. Main character and family were constantly going somewhere new to seek shelter or get away from high crime areas. As we see in high school that the people around us are constantly changing, although we maybe stuck in the same place everything around us is changing. Being a cheerleader for 3 years, definitely teachers you how to be a leader, but not in the normal sense. As a cheerleader you have to make sure everyone is in high spirits even if you aren't in them yourself. It's different being a leader in an academic sense versus being a leader in an emotional sense. All my life I've been the one people turned to to get their feelings of their chest, to feel happy again. And cheer leading is no different, not only do you have to be respectable at school but also outside of school.…

To be in a marching band, one has to almost become one with the band. The instrument played is not a single aspect, but a part of a much larger whole that must be comfortable and confident together. When I first joined the band, I was not one of the more comfortable and confident people that fit in with everyone else. Most all band members are loud and proud of who they are, compared to myself, who always hid behind others and hated being the center of attention. However, almost everyone has that moment when they realize that everybody else is just as self conscious, just as scared, and just as awkward as they are.…

Participating in orchestra taught me how to communicate and work well with different students in a team setting. I learned how to lead and support members in my section by being a good listener, offering positive feedback and providing assistance if needed for the less skilled members (and we would practice relentlessly) to perfect our skills. An orchestra member always desires to work with a leader who shows respect and provides constant feedback and encouragements to…
