In Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Life of Bees, she indirectly characterizes Lily as rather impatient to display Lily’s desire to run away from her abusive household. An example of this is portrayed when Lily is about to leave T Ray and her home, “I needed a solid plan, but I didn’t have the luxury of sitting down to think one up” (41). Without a reliable plan or thinking about the consequences, Lily decides to quickly run away before her abusive father returns, which reveals her impatient personality. For example, the author includes certain phrases such as “but I didn’t have the luxury of sitting down to think one up” to illustrate Lily’s impatient mindset and her eagerness to leave her home without wasting even a second.…

In The Secret Life of Bee's, Lily experiences a love of animals shown from the very first page. In fact, in the first chapter she says “despite everything that happened this summer, I remain tender toward the bees.” (8) I can relate to this love of bees mostly because of my own love for any animal. Several cruel and harsh things happen to Lily during this book including abuse from her father as well as running away from home. Because of this, I cant really relate to much having to do with Lily, except for her love of the bees.…

Depression is another one of those “first-world” problems us humans face as a society. Although it seems like a deathly globe-renowned issue is in mainly todays -mostly in teens- current society, Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how depression may have affected those over fifty years ago- especially the South-American colored people of the Civil Rights Era in 1964. In The Secret Life of Bees, May, an oddly complex character, changes in the novel because of her depression. May is often portrayed as a very gentle, compassionate and selfless character, who immensely feels the suffering and pain of others on an emotional level because of the death of her twin sister. She changes into a character who is selfish and neglectful as she isolates herself,…

“The Secret Life of Bees” is a novel about a young girl on an adventure to discover her lost mother, find love and develop extreme courage. Sue Monk Kidd does a fantastic job on writing about the feelings of the unknown and emphasizing what is great in life, instead of dwelling on the bad things. She punctuates that a family can be found where you would least expect it. A family is not just the people who live under the same roof, but perhaps may be people who share a common adventure or love for something. This type of family is very important for a girl like Lily who was left motherless, with doubts about her place in the world.…
