Case Study: Cook Library

Improved Essays
For my service learning, I have been volunteering at a place called Cook Library. Cook Library serves mainly as a library but also has a large after-school-program for kids in the neighborhood and also is a community center where many other organizations utilize their space. The role I play at Cook Library is one of a tutor. I help out with the after-school-program by helping the kids who come with their homework, reading, and supervising any other activities that take place. Cook Library is located in a heavily Hispanic populated neighborhood so almost all of the kids who come to the after-school-program are Hispanic. That being said, I have seen a handful of African-American children and adults in the space as well. Their age range …show more content…
Cook Library, as mentioned above, mainly provides homework help through an after-school-program for kids. Cook Library also provides tutoring, a 14,000 book library, job search help, resume building help, and is an open community space for organizations to use for meetings. The center also is a safe space for people who need help with simply things like copies and faxes. It is also a place for other organizations to get the word out on their resources. Lastly, it serves as a literacy center for people learning …show more content…
The only information I had in regards to what I would be doing or what Cook Library was all about was that I would be helping kids with their homework and provide tutoring and potentially be a mentor. After my first volunteer experience at Cook Library, I realized what a wonderful organization they are and what great resources they provide to underprivileged children. Since Cook Library is located in a Hispanic neighborhood most of the kids that attend the after-school-program are Hispanic as well. As a minority, these children are already stigmatized purely based on the way that they look. Many children there will be first-generation college-goers and will probably receive a higher education and a better education than many of their parents. Cook Library addresses the failure of the school systems in poor neighborhoods that provide less than quality education by making sure kids are getting extra attention and at times, one on one

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

She decided to write this as a means of providing an idea of the library role and that it will be valued and as a result gets staffed and budgets provided appropriately. Makerspaces Makerspaces allow libraries to offer their patrons innovating technology like 3D printers, sewing machines, coding, and robotics that was not previously and readily assessable. Additionally, makerspaces promote lifelong learning in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical field. For example, libraries whether public, school, or academic are increasingly embracing makerspaces. Makerspaces offer the community a place where patrons can learn through interactive classes and provide advanced technology to a wide range of demographics, especially low-income patrons and minorities. I love how makerspaces are positively impacting their local community and how they help foster a new-found interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in young kids or even adults.…

Library has always been a magical place to me since I was five years old, and it played a compelling role in my childhood development. How librarians know where to find what information from the temple of mystery was amazing to me at that time, and I get to understand comprehensively of library’s vital value to people and community when I studied in universities and visited libraries around the world, especially after few years’ involvement in library as a volunteer. A library is a place where people can access information freely, and it is a public space for community. My career aspiration is to become a professional librarian and assist patrons to access information in the most effective way in digital age. I grew up in a rural small town of China at early ’80s, where people didn’t have much connection to outside world to get direct knowledge other than reading books and newspapers.…
