“The Rocking-Horse Winner” written by D.H. Lawrence is about young boy named Paul who tries with all his might to prove to his oh so greedy mother, that he is full of luck. Paul was brought up only hearing the words of his mother, “There must be more money!” These words haunt young Paul, he even tends to believe that the house whispers the words of his mother. After he receives a wooden rocking-horse, Paul quickly learns that by riding this rocking-horse, he can determine the winner of the horse races. To please his mother, he and the gardener named Bassett begin gambling on the races. Paul’s bets slowly progress into larger winnings, all because of his predictions with the rocking-horse. He starts receiving an increased sum of winnings, which still fail to meet his mother’s satisfactory needs. However, Paul being so focused on his mother’s envy for money, he doesn’t realize the toll it has taken on his well being. On the last race, he gambles more money than ever, gaining a win of over seventy thousand pounds. By this time, he is laying on his deathbed because he had pushed himself to his limits. …show more content…
