First of all, Lawrence addresses the idea that psychological problems can create tension on a family. If there is problems with one person in the household there is more then likely to create a negative surrounding for the rest of the household. The mother within this story continuously is struggling with their financial situation and she rants about it. She never once took into consideration how she was making her son feel as she complained about his father. She never realized the toll she was putting on her son when she made negative comments about his father. In response the the negative comments about their wealth, her son took it upon himself to start gambling on horse races to win money without his mother knowing. He kept putting more and more money into accounts giving it to her on her birthday and regardless of how much money he gave up she was not willing to accept the fact that she was receiving money. “But in the interview with the lawyer, asking if the whole five thousand dollars could not be advanced at once, as she was in debt.” (Pg. 1256 paragraph
