We put them everywhere-not only in books, films, and plays, but also in songs, news articles, cartoons, and video games.” (Kennedy, Gioia 2013) Not only is fiction used to expand the imagination, but fiction can also be used as a vehicle of expression for the human heart to communicate emotions, principles and problems that we often encounter as created beings.…

The Power of Pride All across literature, there are symbols and impersonal forces so strong, they possess the ability to manipulate the world. One might argue that the giftedness of a fiction writer could be determined by his or her ability to capture these forces and fit them into their works. Many authors have possessed this ability; one in particular is Nathanial Hawthorne. Revered by his contemporaries and praised by future generations, Hawthorne used this talent in a variety of short stories and novels.…

The house drives the main character, Paul, to ride to his death in the pursuit of money. Therefore in this story, setting complements the plot. By contrast, “The Lottery” uses setting to establish a normal, run-of-the-mill small town feeling in order to elicit a shock response to the ending. Setting contradicts the final plot twist to heighten the savagery of the ending.…

Evil is understood as the force in nature that oversees and provides a rise to wickedness. Evil is a very difficult subject that many consider displeasing, however, evidence from the stories, “ Young Goodman Brown,”,“ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” shows that evil does exist; and has existed since the beginning of time. By reading these three stories the themes of Good vs Evil, “Young Goodman Brown,” greed and gluttony in, “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and moral decay in, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” become quite apparent. If all these themes are put together, it shows that there is great evil in each and every human heart. In the tale, “ Young Goodman Brown,” Brown is representing the common man who is struggling in the fight good against evil, which he portrays by venturing into the forest in the dead of night ( the forest generally representing wickedness), and discovering things that are suddenly shown or understood in reality that all must eventually face— that there is sin within the world and nobody is perfect.…
