During WWII, over 46,000 US planes crashed killing over 200,000 American soldiers. Also in WWII, over 14,000 US soldiers died in POW camps. Louie was one of the very lucky people that survived both. Growing up, Louie was a very rebellious kid who smoked, drank, got into fights, and would steal anything that was edible. Louie’s brother, Pete, couldn’t stand Louie being like this so he made Louie run, and being a runner changed Louie’s life, forever.…
The three-time U.S. track and field Olympian, Gail Devers once stated, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can’t stay down. We can’t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In the nonfiction book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the courageous Louis Zamperini emulated with Devers words when, even in times of hopelessness and doubt, he survived a World War II bomber plane crash into the great Pacific, where he was left and considered dead for 47 days. To say the least, Louie’s resilient and courageous personality kept him alive and sane throughout the dire situations…
In the words of Gail Devers, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can't stay down. We can’t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In the nonfictional, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini, being the clever man he is, demonstrates Dever’s words though the 36’ Olympics, a treacherous trek in the Pacific, and in many Japanese POW camps. In his early days in Berlin, Louie already began expressing his mischievous cleverness.…
In 2004 through 2014, about 4,053 sherpas have died. This number would decrease if the government would ban expeditions, if people are not experienced. Throughout the years Everest has been a challenge that most climbers want to attempt. However, most people have different reasons on why they want to climb the mountain. One of those reasons that today stands out the most is that they want to feel more better than anyone else.…

In the book, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, there are many conflicts and from those conflicts, lessons are learned. We learn how there is a great power to storytelling, how the fear of shame can motivate people, and how we shouldn’t let anything hold us back, especially things that were out of our control. The biggest theme of the book is how there is an immense power to storytelling. Throughout the book, O’Brien talks about how storytelling helps bring other people into the past and share unknowable experiences with the storyteller. Another thing O’Brien talked about was how storytelling allowed the dead to come back to life.…
After what happened in those two long months, I have never hated anyone more than I do the white men. I never understood fear, until September 4. I have never had such a heavy heart for my family and the other Potawatomi people. I will never forget that day, the day my life was turned upside down.…
The Truth Lies Within The Story When faced with trauma, every individual reacts differently and chooses to express their emotions distinctly. This is especially evident in soldiers and how they deal with loss during wartime situations. In his novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien explores different coping mechanisms for those in traumatic situations. O 'Brien explores the various ways with which soldiers cope with wartime experiences such as through social dependency , through denial and through storytelling in order to deepen one’s understanding the effectiveness of these coping mechanisms. He argues that the only true way to cope is by accepting the reality of the situation one is facing.…
From the Super Bowl to the FIFA World Cup, society has found a way to connect and relate with one another through sports; the metaphorical conduit that consolidates mankind from the far ends of the globe. But one thing we don 't take into account when we watch our favorite stars on the big screen is the darker side of sports that is commonly fallen on deaf ears. Every day, previously thought invincible athletic machines suffer against a silent enemy. No, it doesn 't take up the form of broken bones or halved pay checks and expired contracts, but something with farther reaching consequences and implications. Can you guess?…
The Incan Empire, at its peak, extended over 2,600 miles of South America spanning almost the entire western coast of the continent (D’altroy 3). A large portion of its kingdom was mountainous villages and communities, all functioning at altitudes surpassing 13,000 feet (McKay 307). The Inca developed a large empire in the Andes due to the successful management and intelligent use of the land coupled with their unique physiology. Inca farmers were very aware of the environment they lived in and the conditions of it.…
To begin his article, Reilly uses a more somber tone to illustrate the devastation suffered by the Squad 252 football team. He states that, “But how? Forget about replacing the players. How do you replace the men?” (Reilly).…
Ski patrols work in some of the most dangerous conditions faced by first responders. Not only do they face precarious snow conditions en route to emergencies; but they also must carry all their equipment on their backs and perform rescues in below freezing temperatures. Some patrollers are also trained to rescue individual’s off chairlifts if necessary. On top of the already difficult job of rescuing injured skiers, patrollers also monitor trail conditions, and provide skiers with opportunities to learn more about the sport. Due to these varied skills, I have always thought of these men and women as tough and frightening.…
The definition of perseverance, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.” Louie Zamperini in Unbroken had to persevere through things no one could dream of. His running career didn’t start out very well. His brother forced him to and Louie would quit the second he felt tired. Then he moved to an Indian reservation with a friend for a summer and he came back wanting to run every second he gotall the time.…
