College Admissions Essay: Are You Alright?

“Are you alright?” my mother usually asks me that question whenever I get sick. Then she would touch my forehead and neck to check if I’m hot. She’d rush to our medicine cabinet and get the mercury thermometer, shakes it, and puts it in between my armpit. After two to three minutes, she’d get it and read what it says. “You’re sick, 39 degree Celsius” Mom said. Since then, I have asked my mother to teach me how to read the thermometer. Whenever there’s a family member who gets sick, it would be my turn to check their temperature, and give them their medication. Taking care of my family is always a pleasure. That is why I decided to have a career that is related to taking care of people, and I found that nurses do it. The road to be a nurse …show more content…
The last biochemistry subject that I took was from 2009 at the university that I was enrolled in. I admit that I am a bit rusty when it comes to these problems, but biochemistry is one of my strongest subjects. It is a challenge, but I love it. During the introduction of chapters one and two, it refreshed my memory, but I notice that some of the topics that are being covered right now are not discussed back then. The first laboratory experiment that we did last week, about measuring the rectangle and the weight of those blocks of squares were rudimentary, but very essential to chemistry. It may be simple, but a wrong measurement could lead to bad results. As a future nurse, I want to make sure that I am precise when it comes to measurements; may it be measuring the arm circumference, taking temperature and blood pressure, to giving the right amount of medication to the …show more content…
Last week, the professor introduced us with some basic conversion problems, from meters to centimeters to Celsius from Fahrenheit. This week, we are discussing about how much energy we get from the food we take and change in temperature. These topics are getting deeper and deeper and if you look at the whole picture, they are all related. After the discussion about measuring the grams of carbohydrates, fat, and protein from the food and convert it into joules, it blew my mind to how much energy these food gives me. I appreciate the beauty of measurement because now I know why I became overweight and why the food that I ate slows me down. Measuring the right amount of items is the key for a safe outcome in everything we do. Anything less or more could make a big difference in the outcome that we’re anticipating. Knowing these information, measurement and conversion, are some of the basic skills that I need to hone before stepping into a more complex topics. Being good at this will help me build a stronger foundation not only in chemistry, but on most of the subjects that I will tackle along the way. All these information that are being taught will equip and help me for my career

I found this to be very useful as many of the chemistry stories and scientific explanations went right over my head. The book covers every aspect of science that I could think of. So much of what I learned while reading this book involved much more than just chemistry. I learned about history, alchemy, astrohistory, math, geology, and mythology. At times it seemed as if I was reading a textbook, with how much information there was.…

“If you don’t go the hospital you are going to die,” my mom screamed at me in September of my freshman year of high school in an attempt to get me to go to the hospital. I had slept and violently shook the entire ride home from school while riding in my mom’s car. My sleeping and constant shaking, as well as my burning forehead, convinced my mom that I had a high fever. I looked at her and then said, “Okay, if you think I am going to die, I’ll go.” My mom backed the car up in our driveway, and she turned the car around.…

Only Time Will Tell Have you ever wondered where you’d be in life if it wasn’t for that special someone? Well, if it wasn’t for my younger brother Alex, I would more than likely be in a very dark place in my life. When my brother was only two years of age a school bus ran him over. The impact of the school bus running over a portion of his body almost killed him right in front of me. I was only six at the time, and I can’t help but think, if he didn’t make it through that accident on that horrible day, how my life would been completely different now, and not in a good way.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

Growing up, I was consumed by the little problems of my life and never thought twice about the hardships of others. However, as a self-absorbed fourteen year-old, I found that although ignorance is comfortable, it blocks the true reality of what the world is.
