Robert Frost (1874 - 1963) was born in San Francisco. He was a teacher, writer, and poet and was primarily influenced by daily events. He is a modernist. During World War I, he met Edward Thomas. This was when Frost came up with The Road Not Taken. Frost and Thomas developed a strong friendship. They planned to live side by side while teaching, writing and farming together. Thomas, then, had an important decision to make. He needed to decide between going with Frost or fighting in France. The fighting was not obvious the choice, and going with Frost seemed clear to him. In this poem, the poet comes across two roads and must decide which one to travel on. One is grassy, more common and obviously safe, while the other has a bend far down in the road, and not used very often. This poet takes the less familiar and common road and says it was worth it. The rhyme scheme of this poem is ABAAB. The rhythm of this poem flows through and demonstrates the contemplating of this poet. It slows down when he is thinking and can tell it is a hard decision. In this poem, the obvious meaning is that the person is deciding which road he should talk, the one he is comfortable with or the one that he is not comfortable with. Another meaning is that, you should not always choose the obvious and safe choice. If you take the riskier choice, the outcome could be better and more significant. If you take the same route every time, nothing exciting will happen. If you take a different one, the difference could change your life completely.
