Robert Frost is the author and speaker of the poem “The Road Not Taken”. Robert Frost is an American poet who was born in San Francisco. “The Road Not Taken” is one of the most popular poems written by Robert Frost. It consists of four stanzas and each stanza contains five lines. This poem uses much of symbolism. The author which is Robert Frost, must choose between two paths in the wood but is having trouble deciding which one he should take. He also reveals many emotions such as regret, indecision, decision, and doubt. Correspondingly the poem contains another literary element which is imagery. The speaker still has not come to a decision on which path he wants to take. He soon changes his perception to that the paths were worn about the same. In line eleven it states “And both that morning equally lay” and lines twelve states “In leaves no step had trodden black.” This is obviously saying that both paths are covered with leaves that have not turned black. In lines thirteen it states “Oh, I kept the first for another day”, line fourteen states “Yet knowing how way leads on to way” and line fifteen states “I doubted if I should ever come back. These lines clearly are saying that he is trying to be reasonable with his choice by saving the first for another day. The speaker soon starts to realize that he may never have the opportunity to travel the other path. Once a decision is being made it cannot be undone.
