However, after numerous rereads it is clear that the main theme in this poem is choice. In life, every individual will come to a place where a decision must be made as to where said person will go. “The Road not Taken” does not promote decision based on individuality but more so on being wise. As humans there will always be the resonating question in the back of our heads about whether the road we chose was the correct road, and there might even be the inclination to ponder what life would be like if another path was chosen. The traveler, in a sense, is like a curious baby trying grab something out of reach, “[a]nd looked down one as far as I could / To where it bent in the undergrowth;”(4-5) there is no possible way the end of the road can be seen from the beginning of the fork. There still has to make an attempt to make the best decision for life; that is where the stress and pressure of deliberation. Ultimately no road is going to be less traveled because every path has been walked before, however, it was not until the traveler began walking did that become clear. “Though as for that, the passing there / Had worn them really about the same”(9-10). Unwavering melancholy seems to be the travelers tone towards the end of the poem due to uncertainty of what life will be like days to come when the memory of having to make a choice resurfaces. “I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence” (16-17), will the opportunity reemerge for another chance to choose the road less traveled by? “I doubted if I should ever come back”
