The Road Monologue

The sound of metal clicking into place and the black straps of the harness tightening around me immediately makes my stomach tighten with anxiety. I frantically look over my shoulder to see my uncle and Heather, holding video cameras and smiling wide with anticipation. He says something I don’t quite catch through the sound of heavy rain; people chattering amongst each other; and, of course, my own nervous thoughts. I can't help but focus on how the equipment digs into me and how sweaty my hands feel in the too big adult-sized gloves I could likely fit my head into.

“You ready?” A voice behind me questions impatiently. I turn to find the man who just helped me buckle up the scratched and dented once red

I find myself nodding again. I guess that means I know what I'm doing. I hop up onto a wooden platform and the man clips a little metal thing to the line, that's the only thing suspending me, (This makes my life being on the line feel a lot more literal.) I try not to think about that though. I stare out beyond the platform and over the dense rainforest. Everything is lush and green, like nothing I'd ever before and even though it was pouring rain the sun was still bright and made the rain sparkle off the tree tops like someone had sprinkled them with …show more content…
The warm rain splashes against my face and arm as I look around trying to take everything in, I gaze over the trees below me, which move in a blur of vivid greens under my dangling legs. Until now I hadn't realized I was going nearly this fast (and I understood why they called it zip lining.) The wire made a dull 'zzzzzzzz' sound like when you do up a jacket and I can feel it vibrate my hands as I grip onto it through the thick yellow gloves. I could feel the friction making my fingers warm and the air is sweetly fresh and earthy. It all feels so perfect like it could go on forever and I realize that I wasn't even scared anymore; that was replaced by excitement as a smile creeps across my face. God, this is

So I slowly grasped the sweaty handle bars of the zip line and the conductor tightly put the black belt on my waist. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I took one deep breath and started thinking about how much I had to do in life and if I should go on this risk taking ride. Though, my fear was there, I thought about how this zip line wasn’t that long and could probably come back in 2 minutes, and I could always close my eyes which sort of helped to relieve my fears..…

The Road is a post-apocalyptic novel about a nameless father and son who are traveling to the coast in the south. The author, Cormac McCarthy, neglects to inform the reader as to the causes of the apocalypse but it is inferred that it was caused by man. The nameless son was born in this world, not knowing what a pre-apocalyptic world was like but only knowing the drained world he was born into. Before the son’s mother committed suicide due to the extreme environment their family was put in, she advised them to travel south because the weather was more livable. The father and son have nothing but a pistol loaded with only two bullets to defend themselves with against the anarchic and ruthless population.…

It was filled with ripening fruit trees and undying rows of willows whose branches fell kindly among the flowers. You could hear splashes of raindrops as they hit the ground before your feet with wind dancing a warning of storm around your arms. In the first exploration, we explored the opening monologue of the Narrator and the very first scene. This first scene is important as it can be linked to the idea of omnipresence and control of play. In this case, the control is over how social class affects the main characters. This can also relate to Greeks’ idea of Fates who decide the fate of humans for their own pleasure. The Narrator is always there and it is as if he is amused by the actions of Mickey and Edward.…

The harness was less like a harness and more like one of those things the dentist lays on you when you get X-rays. After seeing the “harness,” my body rebelled. I flopped down on the cold concrete as uncontrollable terror swept over me. My two friends were incredibly entertained by this situation, as I could see them through my tear-blurred vision with their cell phones out, recording me. That made me work up enough courage to put the dumb thing over my shoulders and accept the fact that I could possibly die in 10 minutes.…

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a novel that diverges from the customary standards regarding format of how a novel is written. McCarthy tends to ignore the usage of quotations and apostrophes and also writes in a splintered fashion especially in the beginning of the book adding the tone of minimalistic times. He never reveals the name of the characters and only refers to them as The Boy and The Man as it is written in third person omniscient though it often seems as if the novel was written in first person which adds to the idiosyncrasy of the novel. On the contrary The Road is extremely detail oriented which immensely contributes to the overall theme and tone of the book in addition to putting the reader in the characters shoes. The Road is a fiction piece about a post apocalyptic desolated world centered around a boy and a man trying to fight through constant fear and inhumane…
