Before Eleanor met Park on the school bus she was in a terrible home environment and never felt loved. “Before he’d even decided to do it, Park scooted toward the window. “Sit down”, he said.” (Rowell 9) “Eleanor couldn’t tell if the Asian kid who finally let her sit down was one of them, or whether he was just really stupid.” (Rowell 11) Their love story stars off by hatred and annoyance from one another, until the day Park and gives her a comic book and her whole world is turned upside down by him that makes their hatred turns to love. When Park starts helping entertain Eleanor by comic books and music Eleanor becomes happier than enjoys being with him and his company. The little things that Park has done for Eleanor changed her life totally and impacted her in the biggest way. Park doesn’t only stop there either, Park begins to stop the bullies from bullying her makes Eleanor feel loved and wanted by him when he invites her over to his house everyday afterschool when she is able to. Both books start out with the characters not showing a love interest and evolving into something greater than that. Risking you for someone you love becomes a major topic in both books because in order for their love to work they must sacrifice their self for the other. Since these two books use a different type of risk for the love it shows to the reader how that risk can very depending on the situation and one does not triumph the other. Without the theme of risking yourself for love these two stories would be completely different and wont have such a great impact that these books have on children reading them. Most children grow up different than the person next to them and that does not mean that the two different kinds of people can get along. All of the two main characters in the books grow up different from looks to family structures and that caused a problem in the beginning but after time became irreverent to the characters. This is a factor both sets of characters from each book had to overcome for their love to work and without that love wouldn’t be
