It can be described as a trade where one surrenders their land for promise of protection. Divided into sections by a hierarchy, the king is at the top and following was the bishop, barons, the lord, and at the bottom was the peasants/serfs. The kings believed they were given divine right, the right to rule by God, and would share this power with the barons who overused their power. A new era in world history can usually be marked by some event that causes great social or political upheaval. In England between 1455 and 1487, a dynastic power struggle between two houses of the Plantagenet royal family marks the beginning of the English early modern period. This contention for the throne was known as the Wars of the Roses, and was a large factor in the end of feudalism in England. While most other major powers in Europe had already begun the transition into modernity, England was slightly behind, and its government was still largely decentralized, with most areas ruled by a semi-local lord or earl. This allowed for much contention in the English court, and, after a generation of powerful Lords in the Plantagenet family with…

Feudalism, England’s alternative to a government during the Middle Ages, played a significant role in the age of war and monarchs, and in some ways continues to have a role in today’s government. The workings of feudalism are simple. A king, or lord, gives land, also known as fiefs, ownership to nobles, also known as vassals, and in return for the king’s overall protection, the vassals would be responsible for providing their support and defense in the form of knights. In reciprocation for their service, knights were given smaller sized fiefs, this was known as subinfeudation. The peasants, or serfs, would do all upkeep of the land.…

The Impact of Early Medieval Universities Development of early medieval universities began during the High Middle Ages, a time of economic prosperity and growth in population for Medieval Europe. Around the late 11th Century the development of important early universities would be caused by sudden urbanization of Europe and early influencers of higher education During the High Middle Ages a rise in economic activity would come from a revival of trade that would occur from the rebuilding of old cities and creation of new cities that would be major urban centers throughout Europe. The rise in bigger cities led to people moving from a poor rural life to live a more “prosperous” life in the crowded Urban Centers of Europe (1) Urbanization of Europe is actually even concurrent with the rise in universities in Europe This can be seen in the Western Schism of the 14th Century, when Urban VI is elected to Pope in Rome, but is eventually disliked for poor ruling and with support of the King of France and government officials Clermont VII is elected to Antipope in Avignon, France. However Pope Urban VI does…
