A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich examines the 1785-1812 diary of Martha Ballard, a midwife in Hallowell, Maine. Ballard composed concise daily entries that chronicle her domestic work, deliveries and nursing, as well as community events. These entries, coupled with Ulrich’s extensive archival research, show the complexity of the female economy and its interactions with the mercantile economy of the late 18th century. Ulrich presents the masculine and feminine economic interactions through the analogy of a checkered cloth. As the weaver wove together white and blue thread, squares of white, blue, and intermixed squares emerged.…
In the future, I would like to become a certified clinical medical assistant. I have always been fascinated by the medical field and knew somehow, I wanted to be a part of it. When I was a child and a lot of times during my adolescence I had several moments of indecision about the things that I wanted. From the simplest to the most complicated. And although it was hard to choose what to write or what flavor of ice cream to buy, I was always sure of one thing: I like to help people. That's why I chose nursing as my career to college because this was a way I found to realize my dream; being able to help my fellow man when he needs it most. Care, protect, guide and support anyone who needs, help others to face their fears and challenges, it is very rewarding!…

Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I told him I wanted to be a doctor. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…
Midwifery is the only career I envisage myself having. This realisation occurred whilst reading a news article. The particular article that drove me to my career aspiration involved a baby who had been born with his bowel outside of his body; I was in awe when I read this. As a young Year 7 student, I remember showing my friends the next day about how phenomenal the midwives were. Instantly, I decided that midwifery would be the career for me.…
“Be the change you wish to see in the world” is a statement that I now live by as an adult. As a child, I have always had aspirations of becoming a physician. However, at that stage, I did not understand the difficulty of addressing health and medicine. This “change” occurred when I finally realized the complexity of my identity and observed the health inequality of a specific group of people. My goal is to become an internist and pursue a career in academic medicine to address the health disparities of an underserved population, the minority Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer (LGBTIQ) community.…
The summer before fifth grade I went to the Children’s Hospital for an upper GI scope. I was very afraid because I have never done something like that and I didn't know what was going to happen. The nurse in the surgery room was explaining what they were attaching to me which made me feel better about everything. The nurses were asking me questions so I was distracted and would talk about fun things. I am very appreciative of those nurses that took care of me that day.…

I belong to a family where being a physician has become a tradition. Not long ago, none of my forefathers were educated. It all changed when my grandfather had a problem with his knees. The best doctors in the country advised a biopsy and a sample was taken and sent to the U.K. My family was shocked when the results reported a malignant growth and doctors advised an above knee amputation.…
Being a doctor has always been a dream of mine. I love the sciences and I also love helping people. More importantly, this can be because I can compare my characteristics and personality as similar to that of a doctor. These include being patient, confident, and knowledgeable.
