In the year 2016, we live in a very progressive time. We are on the heel end of the first African American presidency, women are taking major leading roles in both the film and sports industries, and same sex marriage is now legalized and more accepted than ever within all fifty states. Everything on the surface seems to be on the right track for America’s social progression. Even though everything seems fine and dandy on the surface there is a disturbing trend happening online. That trend is internet trolling and the amount of online hate speech it produces. But, what is a troll and what is trolling? No they are not mythical creatures that live under a bridge. Wikipedia defines a troll as “Someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.”

It’s not easy to spot a troll in real life. When I walk down the street I see people getting along for the most part. I see people of different cultures, genders and sexual orientations working with one another to get through the day. So then, in a society that has been more progressive in the past 20 years than it has in the past hundred years towards different demographics, why is hate speech running so rapid online?
