Having a carefree attitude can come with harsh consequences. Being safe is better than being free because when given too much freedom, one is not cautious in their actions. Therefore in The Rights to the Streets of Memphis, welcoming refugees into the U.S. and having a car accident all demonstrates the importance of being cautious to ensure one’s life is safe. Parents tend to not give their children too much freedom, for example go out alone or be out extremely late. However in the story The Right to the Street of Memphis, written by Richard Wright, Richard’s mom gave him the freedom to go out alone, leading him into some trouble. Growing up in a fatherless home, it was a struggle for his mother financially. His mother used the excuse of his father not being home for Richard to step up and be the man of the house. His mother sends him to buy some groceries at the store one afternoon. On his way he encounters a couple of punks who knock him down, punch him and take his money. He runs home in a panic to his mother who only sends him back. Poor Richard goes back more than twice and each time gets punched and robbed. By this time, the mom is fed up and threatens him that if he does not return with the groceries, he should not bother coming home. Letting him be on his own at such a young age is dangerous. As it is stated in “Poll: Americans divided on admitting refugees”, “Refugees entering the U.S. undergo rigorous background checks, including a search of government databases that list people suspected of having ties to terrorist groups. Processing of refugees can take up to two years”. The process is surely long, but the reason behind it is important since the government are concerned for the safety of American lives. The national security has also risen because of this epidemic. In an article, “The Cost of Immigration Enforcement and Border Security” it presented, “Since 1993...…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Freedom and safety are two luxuries humans value immensely. Of the two, Freedom is more important than safety. Tiananmen Square, “The Hunger games” and The Ukrainian Revolution validate why is it better to be free than safe. Tiananmen Square was an event that happened June of 1989 in Beijing, China. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The Immigrant’s Lament by Mois Benarroch is a poetry collection released by Moben Publishing. Included in this collection are several short poems—one or two pages long—such as “The Transsexual’s Lament.” These short poems are framed by two longer works: the title poem, “The Immigrant’s Lament,” and “Self portrait of the poet in a family mirror.” Benarroch’s poetry runs commentary on a few core topics, namely love, writing, a sense of belonging, generational differences, and the realities of diaspora.…

Stories such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, “The Hunters of Men”, and “Civil Disobedience” all have a connection with the fight to gain civil rights and equality. Much of that still carries on into the 21st century we live in today. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a woman takes matters into her own hands in order to save her child, showing her strength and bravery that many women in today's time possess as well. “The Hunters of Men”, a short story written by John Greenleaf Whittier, is considered to be a public attack on slave hunters. The public attacks against their government and the way people were treated didn't stop there, in “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau, Thoreau made sure to show that the people had more power over the government than they thought.…

Also the comma in that quote again leaves a small gap between, (“In the old times”) and (“before he threw away his knees”) which again stresses the gap and again increases the anti-climax. He also uses a hyphen here, “He thought he’d better join – He wonders why.” (Line 24) Again Owen is creating an anti-climax but he is trying to stress the fact that the veteran feels as if he lost his limbs for nothing…
