The Right Decision: Marji’s Story
Iran. In the 1980’s, both Iraq and Iran declared war. The results of this war caused innocent people to die, and many injured with no home. For Marji, a young girl who was 12 years old at the time, had unfortunately experienced this horrifying moment in her life. Things got so bad that her parents sent her to her aunts in Vienna, Austria. To be quite honest, I agree with the parent’s decision on sending her to Vienna. This war caused death to many, and horrifying

One reason why her parents sent her away from Iran is because Marji can now focus on her education and can now start working her tail off so that she can possibly bring her parents to Vienna as well. Leaving has always been Marji’s dream as she herself has stated, “So, my great dream went off in smoke. I wouldn’t be able to go to the United States (Satrapi, pg.72).” You could argue that Marji is leaving her parents behind but I think she is going to do whatever she can to eventually bring them with her. Another reason why her parents sent her away is because of the way they treat women in Iran, they call them names and force them to wear clothing they don’t want to wear. For example, a veil. A veil is a piece of fabric that is worn by women to protect or hide their faces. With all that said Marji’s mom was assaulted by a soldier, she said “They insulted me. They said that women like me should be pushed up against a wall and f****d, and then to be thrown in the garbage (Satrapi, pg.74). Experiencing something that harsh and messed up would hopefully make any parent want to remove their child and protect them from such a place. You could argue that being called such a thing is no big deal but that is a harsh thing to say. None-the-less, it should’ve never been
