Reflection On The Conflict Model Of Criminal Justice

The ride-a-long project took place on a Saturday the second day of July in the year 2016 by seven o’clock in the morning with the Harris county Sherriff officer, Ashley Rogers. It is a wonderful opportunity to participate in this tremendous project. I am honored as well as excited to be riding with this outstanding female officer who was interested in helping me not only on my project but also assisted me in choosing a better career in law enforcement. Days before the scheduled date, the officer took it upon herself to contact me first immediately she was assigned to ride with me. This police officer though she told me she loved her job and was professional, it is obvious by the way she carried herself while on the job and is always with …show more content…
The Sherriff’s department and the Houston police department do not work together on fighting crimes unless it is a high-risk matter and even at that, there will be a third party involved for them to share information or communicate. This goes on to confirm what I have studied in the class. The conflict model of the criminal justice perspective assumes that the system’s components function primarily to serve their own interests. According to this theoretical framework, justice is more a product of conflicts among agencies within the system than it is the result of cooperation among component agencies. It baffled me how people who are caught committing a crime cannot be arrested simply because they are outside their jurisdiction. Combating crimes need everybody’s commitment and cooperation if actually having a crime free society is part of their objectives. Some of these violators are aware of these laws and take the advantage of it since they know they will get away with …show more content…
The homeowner just returned from a vacation and found out that their home was burglarized. After checking out what was stolen, it was discovered that the burglars are people that know the homeowner. This is another confirmation of what I have learned in this course that ninety percent of home burglars are known to that person. I was able to learn what the initial questions law enforcement officers ask in the event of a burglary. What day the family left the house and when did they return? Were there any signs of forced entry? What items was stolen and if they have serial numbers so that they can be traced down to pawn shops. I also enjoyed using the fingerprinting tools to trace the burglar’s prints on the broken glass but was thrilled to note that law enforcement agencies take palm print of individuals just to get a more accurate

For my short paper interview with a police officer, I decided that I wanted to focus on the field training program of a major city with a large, diverse community, so I reached out to the Boston Police Department (BPD). My reason for this was due to the civil strife we saw in Baltimore several weeks ago. Both Baltimore and Boston are similar in population and the size of their departments. In Baltimore, it appears that poor field training may have led to systematic failures and was responsible for the incident involving Freddie Gray. For this research, I was able to get in touch with Kelley O'Connell of the Boston Police Department.…

Police officers are brave men and women. Each of them risking their lives every day that they work, so the public can be safe. They spend less time with their families by doing their job of protecting the public, and creating a safer community for all to live in. Although there are many reports/articles on speculated racism coming from events where police officers open fire on unarmed men of color. This is not the case for many officers in the line of duty.…

Our class had the honor to hear a lecture by Clayton Board of Commission Jeff Turner and the future of community policing. Clayton County police has made its main goal to preserve their relationship with the citizens of Clayton. Turner explained that the reason why there is distrust in the community is due to the fact that the media has created this negative image of police officers. The media creates this negative stereotype that police officers and the community is at war with each other and there is a lot of civil unrest. This is simply untrue the community backs the officers in their community because they serve and protect us the people.…

On October 7, 2015 at approximately 1100hrs I, Officer Sullivan and SGT Harris responded to a burglary at 407 North 12th ST. Upon our arrival I talked with Ted Williams; he is the owner of the property and he rents the building to Mychelle Erickson. Ms. Erickson runs a Medical Marijuana grow facility that is housed in the building. Ms. Ericksons' employee Fred Dobrowski was at the location starting to clean up when we arrived. Mr. Williams walked me through the damage of the property starting with the fuse box that is located on the East side of the building.…

There are numerous “theoretical” reasons for constructing particular behaviors as “criminal” affecting the measurement of crime over time due to advocates of diverse theories such as conflict theories, consensus theories, constructionist theories, and integrationist theories. Firstly, the conflict theory is developed from a structuralist perspective as it initiates with the ideology of Marx, focusing on “the unequal distribution of power in society such as class, race or gender.” (Morden & Palys, 2014, p.75) The conflict theory affects the way we think or measure crime drastically because crime data is now inessential due to inequality as society is full of groups in conflict defining laws for their own interests. This theory doesn’t emphasize…

A Theory is defined as “A series of interrelated propositions that attempts to describe, explain predict, and intimately control some class of events. A theory gains explanatory power from inherent logical consistency and is tested by how well it describes and predicts reality (Pearson. 2015). The integrated theory attempts to pinpoint the elements that work with one another to maintain individual customs, and practices. This theory is known as the “integrative theory”, because it takes from multiple disciplines and theoretical viewpoints, including but not limiting Sociobiological, and psychological view points and varies others that may fall into this category. An Integrative criminology seeks to bring together the diverse bodies of knowledge…

The crime control model is considered to be a conservative approach to crime that focuses on protecting society from criminals by regulating criminal conduct and justice. Moreover, this model stresses strict and swift punishment for crimes; in return, this strict adherence benefits society by striking fear in criminals because they will be harshly punished. The crime control model also seeks to move criminal cases through the criminal system as quickly as possible. The goal of the model is to get the cases through the systems swiftly, even if that means expanding the powers of the courts. In fact, this model supports greater powers for prosecutors and the courts that are handling the cases.…

Yes, I would have to agree that the peacemakers are a viable alternative to traditional criminal justice intervention in social conflicts. Consequently, “each year, the CRS’s conciliators bring hundreds of communitywide conflicts to peaceful closure across the United States and its territories” Bohm, R. & Haley, K. (2014). Peacemakers are key factors in allocating turbulent situations arising in our communities, courtrooms, and emerging conflicts. Therefore, by allowing peacemakers the right to address community incompatibility and apprehensiveness, this will alleviate excessive…

Introduction Today’s society defines crime as “A violation of social rules of conduct, interpreted and expressed by criminal code, created by people holding social and political power” (Siegel, Worrall, 2014) There are three specific perspectives of crime which include, consensus view: “The view that the great majority of citizens agree that certain behaviors must be outlawed or controlled and that criminal law is designed to protect citizens from social harm.” , conflict view: The view that criminal law is created by those who hold political an economic power and is a tool used by the ruling class to control dissatisfied have-not members of society.”, and interactionist view: “the view that criminal law reflects the preferences of people who hold social power in the society and use their influence to impose their own values and moral code on the rest of the population.” (Siegel, Worrall, 2014) Throughout this paper I will use the three perspectives of crime along with examples from both The Purge (2013) and The Purge: Anarchy (2014) and other scholarly sources…

As a legal studies student, I have studied the three areas of the criminal justice system, Policing, The Courts, and Corrections to some degree. However, most of my exposure has been concentrated on the Court system. For this paper, I will be concentrating on the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, and the role policing plays in the community. The sheriff department, and the police department are two separate law enforcement agencies. Their main function is to provide mandated services to the communities they serve, but they differ in terms of jurisdictional powers.…

I believe the theory is important in the criminal justice field because it presents information in detecting why a crime occurs and it gives a different perspective. When that information is processed, a plan could be executed to determine how to control or create a plan without incorporating one's opinion or beliefs. For instance, I have noticed in the last few years, that the prison system is focused on rehabilitating the offender by creating an opportunity for them to obtain their GED and some to further their education. Also, some have been giving the chance to go back into society to work with the company to gain a skill to prepare them to gain employment once they return back to their community. In doing so, the theory gives some insight…

In our society, it is important to control those who violate laws in order to keep the public safe. The criminal justice system is given this responsibility. Society relies on those in this system to effectively combat crime. This may sound simple, but many have debated how to efficiently fight crime for years. Two concepts that have been debated are the crime control model and the due process model.…
