The Rich Hayes Short Story

Improved Essays
In the middle of the lush woods in Chatham County North Carolina there is a mysterious circle, that’s 40 ft in diameter, of barren land. Animals tend to avoid the area and plants do not grow. This has intrigued soil scientist Rich Hayes, and he has ventured to this area to collect various samples from within the circle and around the circles exterior. Because of this the locals have come up with a legend stating that the devil himself paces the circle with his fiery hooves every night and plans new ways to cause mass destruction. They also say that if anything is left in the circle over night, it’ll be gone by morning. Most of the time they're only a few miles away, but sometimes they’re never seen again. Don’t worry though, it’s just a legend!

Dinner With Walter Mitty From what we’ve read in James Thurber’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” Walter Mitty has an ebullient and wandering imagination. There are multiple occasions in the short story in which Mitty is distracted by a daydream that is somehow tied to what’s happening in reality, causing him to lose sight of what he’s doing at the time. Absent-mindedness can cause some trouble if one finds themselves in a daydream while driving, or perhaps in the middle of a conversation. On the other hand, daydreams can be beneficial for coming up with ways to problem-solve, and for improving mood and brain function. With this in mind, I imagine a dinner with Walter Mitty as being an interesting-or at least, amusing- experience…

Ray Miller stood in front of the Pearly Gates, sighing with relief. He had finally made it to the top of the endless, winding marble stairs, taking in the soaring view while trying to catch his breath. The pastor pulled out an old piece of cloth from his pocket to meticulously rub his glasses and squinted at the imposing structure in front of him. His gaze followed the intricate etchings depicting the history of humanity, from the creation of Adam and Eve to the birth and death of Jesus and everything in-between, astounded by the sheer immensity of the gates. Patiently, the so-called shepherd waited behind the boisterous pilot and listened in on the conversation being held between him and Saint Peter.…

The Danger of the Single Story From the great epics of Homer to the legendary myths told around campfires, stories are constantly surrounding us. They define the culture and assist in preserving history. Without stories, there would be no knowledge of the ancient Greek myths or of what life was like for the Jews who suffered under Hitler’s torment. Without stories, the world would be blind to the past, unable to progress or learn. Thus, stories are essential in any culture, but they have an inherent danger as well.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…
