Under the veneer of praising Donald Trump in the title of her essay – “The rhetorical brilliance of Trump the demagogue” (Mercieca, 2015), Jennifer Mercieca explores Trump’s rhetorical strategy to rally the American public into supporting him in spite of his offensive rhetoric. Using Donald Trump’s December 7 Statement on Preventing Muslim Immigration (Trump, 2015) as an example, Mercieca puts forth this essay to explain Trump’s “profound and persistent appeal” (Mercieca, 2015) through demagoguery in his speeches. Mercieca's primary exposition on how Trump’s ideas are framed and entrenched through rhetorical devices has led to his ability to successful craft a political narrative which positions himself as a hero saving “a nation in crisis”
