Millions of sea animals are killed every year as a result of consuming pollution that is made up of manmade plastic in the ocean. In an effort to wake up the human population and make them realize what they are doing to the environment, the Endangered Wildlife Trust created an advertisement to make people stop and think about what they are putting into the world. With the use of rhetoric, the author reaches out to everyone to show them that their actions have consequences. The purpose of the ad is to demonstrate the negative effectives of pollution. A graphic picture is shown of a dead pelican lying on the ground with its stomach open so the insides are visible to the viewer. The insides of the pelican show what it has eaten and all of it happens …show more content…
They also do not enjoy being faced with a problem they have caused such as the death of the bird due to its consumption of their litter. Looking into the stomach of the pelican, many plastic things can be found, such as a lighter, bottle caps, and other plastic items. All of these pieces are manmade and non-biodegradable, which is horrible for the environment because the trash will never break down. These are items that a human carelessly throws away or maybe even sometimes tosses them on the ground without thinking. But seeing the damage that is done to the dead pelican from doing that, a person is more likely to take a second thought about where they are throwing their trash. In this ad, the bird is laying on the pavement and that is a bit ironic considering when a person is likely to throw away stray trash it is on the pavement. Also that stray trash that is on the pavement, is likely to be picked up by animals such as birds. In the end, the place where the animal has found its killer is also where it is laid to rest.
The quote on the bottom left hand side of the ad reads “If you don’t pick it up they will,” is a very compelling part of the advertisement. It lets the reader know that if they are not cautious with their behaviors, there are consequences to them. The quote is in all bolded white, capital letters to place a degree of importance on the issue. The text is not the first thing that is seen when looking at the picture but when it is, it leaves a very strong impact on the viewer.
