The Interesting bet "The death penalty is more moral and more humane than imprisonment for life. Capital punishment kills a man at once, but lifelong imprisonment kills him slowly. Which executioner is the more humane, he who kills you in a few minutes or he who drags the life out of you in the course of many years?" (Chekhov). The author uses tone to make it more suspenseful because you want to be informed of who shall win or lose the bet. As well as the mood of the story it is also suspenseful because you want to recognize who will succeed or fail the wager. The author showed this when said “he is asleep and most likely dreaming of the millions. And I have only to take this half-dead man, throw him on the bed, stifle him a little with the pillow” (Chekhov). This shows that the banker was vile enough to kill the lawyer even though he served his years in solitary confinement because the banker would no longer have a fortune and be in debt. The lawyer did not give in to the banker. He stayed for fifteen long years in solitary confinement enduring and the boredom. This is demonstrated when the author says “To-morrow at twelve o’clock I regain my freedom” (Chekhov) this shows that the lawyer did not succumb to defeat and endured those longs years because he previously believed that the bet was worth the time. The author uses indirect characterization because the only actual direct characterization we get is when the banker talks about the bet and the rest of the story is indirect because the lawyer is in imprisonment for fifteen year.
