‘Ich bin ein Berliner’, a speech by John F. Kennedy on the Berlin Wall, has been delivered on the 26th of June 1963 in the west of Berlin. The Belin Wall was built in 1961 and divided Berlin in East and West Berlin. The east of Berlin and also the east of Europe, was controlled by the soviet Union and the west of Berlin was controlled by the Allies. The Soviet-union built the Berlin Wall to prevent people from the east to move to the west of Europe. Before the Berlin Wall many people moved away from the east, because the circumstances were better in the west. Though in the speech Kennedy doesn’t literally mention the wall, it is still clear that this speech is about that. The main message Kennedy tried to convey with this speech was that communism is bad. He clearly didn’t like the system, because it takes away people’s freedom. Therefore he asks to break down the German wall and to make Germany and Europe one again. He wanted this so ‘this great Continent of Europe could be a peaceful and hopeful globe’, as he states in his speech. John F. Kennedy is very convincing in his speech as he has a strong ethos and pathos in his speech. This is for example due to his background. When the speech would have been held in the eastern part of berlin it would have been slightly different, it would for example probably have focussed more on giving people hope. When the speech would have been held after the fall of the wall it probably would have focussed more on the political aspect than on making people feel
