Arnold is talking about his parents and how they could have been someone important but sadly they didn’t realize their dreams and lost hope and gave up. “ But we reservation Indians don’t get to realize our dreams. We don’t get those chances or choices. We’re just poor. That’s all we are”( Alexie ,12 ). But when the textbooks were handed out he noticed his mom's name was in the book. Arnold thought “ My school and tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same books our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world. My hopes and dreams floated up in a mushroom cloud” ( Alexie, 31). This quote relates to the topic because he had hope of doing good in school and being a wealthy man one day. But he saw who the book once belonged to, and his hope to do good was lost. His hope was lost because the books were old and he knew no one on the rez did anything in their life to buy textbooks.
