King Philip of Macedonia captured this town and expanded it, renaming it Philippi and allowed the citizens of this colony to be regarded as citizens of Rome. The Apostle Paul during his second missionary travels arrived in Philippi and began his ministry there. After the conversion of Lydia; the exorcism of a slave girl; and an earthquake, Paul and Silas were imprisoned in Philippi. The book of Philippians is written as a letter of encouragement to the Church at Philippi. Paul reminds the church to grow in knowledge, depth of insight, and strive to be righteous. He shares with them, and we, as readers, what is needed to do to accomplish this.
