The Revolutionary War: The Patriots And Loyalists

When the war started it split American colonist into two groups. These groups were loyalists and patriots. The Patriots and Loyalists were always at each other’s throats. Many of the Loyalist lost their homes and jobs because of the location of where they were living. However the Loyalist helped Britain fight and very few were rewarded for the generosity and dedication. The patriots wanted to take over, they wanted independence from Britain and own their own country. Some other names for the Patriots were, Sons of Liberty, Rebels, Whigs, and Colonials. The patriots felt that the British was not treating them good enough, they wanted to be treated with more respect and have more advantages. They felt this way because they were taxed for no reason. Some other names for the Loyalists were, Tories, Royalist, and the King’s friends. These people thought that they would be better off under British rule and then some people were afraid to stand up but all in all they believe things would work out better. Life for the Loyalist became rough during the war. Some loyalist were even in danger because they lived in areas where Patriots were in control and a lot of Patriots had lost their homes and businesses in that area. During the war a lot of the Patriots decided to leave then later return to Britain. However some decided to stay and help the British fight the Patriots.
