The Responsible Citizens’ Proliferation of Knowledge In the essay “Having a Degree and Being Educated”, Edmund Pellegrino argues that people are becoming dangerously dependent on illusions to bear with reality. Pellegrino declares that people believe that “having a degree is the same as being educated”. Pellegrino states knowledge is nothing but meaningless information without the ability to not just understand it, but to be able to apply it to our daily lives and he then continues to compare knowledge to a disease that while non-lethal, needs to be handled with caution to prevent it from spreading. In Northrup Frye’s passage he says that, “The concept of a responsible citizen very much parallels that of being an educated person. Responsible citizenship clearly requires citizens who are informed and involved. An informed citizen is an embodied knower: a person, who seeks information, considers conflicting discourse, is reflective and utilizes critical thinking skills”. For instance, there are dozens of citizens that vote without possessing critical thinking skills and are not knowledgeable about political affairs leading them to elect the wrong decisions. Voters attempt to avoid this by relying on social media to research what other people consider the best choice is but they tend to forget that not all social media is a reliable source of information. There are people that delight in spreading misleading information through social media to make people believe what the person wants them to believe. That is why it is best to utilize a multitude of different sources so that they can find out whether few articles are true or if they are just disreputable propaganda by politicians to turn the tide in their favor at the expenditure of uninformed voters. In the video, “Reading and Civic Engagement", Dana Gioia argues that people need to be educated in order to be a responsible civilian contributor to society. There are instances where having a certain amount of knowledge is required in order to contribute to society. Such as the teachers sharing their knowledge with their students, police officers arresting criminals, lawyers fighting for justice while defending the innocent, architects building the buildings of society, and most of all doctors healing the sick. There are also instances where knowledge is not a necessity. For instance there are hundreds of people that participate at volunteer centers with nothing but the desire to learn from others how to help out in the community.
