The Responsibility Of Racial Discrimination In The United States

Improved Essays
Yes, we are fully responsible for the way we shape our society and encourage racism to be continued. Racial behavior is rooted so deep in people's unconscious level that very often people themselves cannot recognize the way they are marginalizing people of color. Majority of people in this country cannot recognize how much prejudices thoughts they have, so very often they do nothing to stop racist behaviors. When I came in the United States I did nothing to stop other white people from hating and talking bad about black people. However, I just quietly watched and observed the way black and white people treat each other in this country. I take full responsibility for not taking any actions to protect people that are being insulted because

Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexican-Americans, whether legal or not, have been discriminated against in the United States since they came to the land said to be built upon freedom and equality. They have became an ethnic, social, and linguistic minority in a vastly white English speaking majority. Through appealing to morals, examples of discrimination, and the use of statistics, Gibson emphasizes the urgency and magnitude of the problem of Hispanic discrimination in America. By appealing to the morals of his non-Hispanic audience, Gibson effectively proves that discriminating against Hispanics is clearly the wrong thing to do and that our society needs to come together to stop this problem. He begins his argument by saying what truly “makes…

Since 1492, when Columbus arrived in the Indies and began to exploit the Native people living there, race has been a controversial issue in America (Zinn 6). Soon after Columbus, Europeans began importing African slaves for labor (Gates 3). In ancient times, people had different views of what race meant: some viewed race as being a representation of where one were currently living, while others insisted that it was based upon where one came from, or how they looked (Aronson 131). Regardless of the accepted definition, this discrepancy proves that race is based on completely superficial prejudices and does not reflect any “natural inferiority.” Race-based slavery has played an important role throughout American history, which differs from other…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

In all cultures there is some sort of stereotypes that persist, despite laws that outlaw discrimination and teaching that has tried to enlighten our minds. In the United States, there are the pervasive stereotypes such as blonde women are dumb, black people are thieves and Hispanics are lazy. While each of those stereotypes don’t really hold true, still they persist. Even the Chinese are said to be racists with some regions feeling superior to other regions and admiring white people. In 1968, the last recorded lynching in the United States occurred. Forty-eight years later, African Americans continue to face the threat of extrajudicial fatalities at the hands of those that have vowed to protect them. In a Wall Street Journal poll, 96 percent of respondents expected racial unrest over the summer of 2015 (Hook). The deaths of Michael Brown and Freddie Gray sparked riots.…

When settlers came to America, they discriminated against those different from them. Oblivious to the plights of others, discrimination made the settlers treat African Americans, Native Americans, Women, and LGBT+ members like sub-humans. It created a mold to keep these groups in line, punishing those who did not fit. Discrimination empowered those who fit, placing them in a pristine, glowing tower held aloft by the oppression of minorities and an air of superiority surrounding it. For centuries, the tower stood unopposed, bestriding the people below.…

As long as the American history goes, the majority race was White, but the demographics are changing. In the different waves of immigrants is when race played a huge factor. There was a lot of conflict within the white race amongst classifications. It was not until other races started entering the United States of America, that race was constructed. I really do not think that white would let go of their privilege in order to benefit all women, including women of color.…

In fact author Joe Feagin has written an article that proves to people just how much discrimination against African Americans is still occurring in public places. One of the attitudes of the African American towards job searching is that they have the fear of being discriminated by their white counterparts who happen to be their employers in most of the time. Another fear is that of harassment by their employers and being underpaid as compared to other employees who are working in the same positions. Another attitude is that they fear being demoralized or being intimidated by their employers, and even being used wrongly. Some of the enlightened African Americans have self-motivation despite the social norms that are constructed on a racial basis.…

African Americans face a reality that many others in this country do not. They are subject to discrimination in the work force, socially, and politically. The legacy of slavery and its effects, such as lack of property and voting, still follows African Americans in many aspects, especially regarding racial profiling and incarceration rates. Whom do I blame for this, simply the whites. If you Tim Wise’s article “what whites don’t know about racism” you’d agree with me. Whites haven’t experienced what blacks experienced in their lifetime, so when you tell them that they are more privileged they won’t see it and they use the reverse discrimination that blacks have it more than whites. As Wise puts it “is to say that white folks know black and brown reality better than those who live it” that’s being ignorant because the fact is that you don’t know, they don’t see themselves as the problem. With slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation and all that has happened and with that blacks has faced and with injustice they face today only “four out of ten whites would concur” and whites are to blame…
